Integrate tunbridge fair into your classroom

Ideas and Web Links:

  • Make a class list of everything seen at the fair.  Classify & list by the five senses.
  • Use a map of the fair to demonstrate coordinates and map reading skills.
  • Make advertising posters for the fair.  The directors of the fair would love to see these!
  • Decorate your classroom with blue ribbon name tags on each desk, a collection of fair artifacts (old tools, quilts, picture, blue ribbons, vegetables...).
  • Hold a colonial craft day at school with parent volunteers.  Set up stations for candle making, quilting, stenciling...
  • Have each student bring in a vegetable.  Graph results.  Compare the numbers on your graph.
  • Make a class book.  Assign students to research the blacksmith, the schoolhouse, the post office, sawmill, transportation, fashion, cooking, candle making etc. while visiting Antique Hill.  Further research can be done at school.
  • Imagine yourself living and working in colonial times.  Write creatively about your  life.
  • Make a  (real) graph of fair souvenirs. Which did most students collect the most of, least of. Make a paper graph to match the real one to display.
  • Practice money skills with fair related word problems.  Use the Premium Book to set up problems.
  • Play iIim Going to the Fair.i  Sit in a circle.  First child says iIim going to the fair and I want to see a cow.i  Second child days, iIim going to the fair and I want to see a cow and a horse.i  Third child says, iIim going to the fair and I want to see a cow, a horse and a merry-go-round.i  Etc.
  • You are welcome to come ahead of time to create a scavenger hunt or game of some kind.
  • Make a fair ABC.
  • Write an essay or draw a picture about your favorite part of the fair.
  • Make a class mural on what you did at the fair.
  • Research an overview of the history of the fair.
  • Create a study of Vermont farms and agriculture.
  • Have a scavenger hunt, using the five senses (ex. smell of cotton candy, taste of an ear of corn, seeing the Ed Larkin Contra Dancers, etc.)
  • Explore distance, rate, and time problems involving different vehicles to get to the fair.
  • Practice interviewing skills (key people at the fair).
  • Calculate the iPig Tracki perimeters at the racing pig track.
  • Study Vermont geography.
  • Refer to the bibliography for a few books to read about the fair/farm theme.
  • Research, make, and eat a colonial meal.
  • Play colonial games (ex. jacks, ninepins, checkers, chess, tag, red rover, etc.)
  • Make quilt squares (paper or cloth) for a quilt.
  • Hold a spelling bee.
  • What are the differences between the various breeds of animals?
